Mestrando Osso Duro & Professora Mulher Maravilha
Mestrando Ossoduro (Marcus Vinicius) – Axe Capoeira Vancouver’s leader (Commercial Dr), he is best known for fusing MMA and Capoeira into his own unorthodox and exciting game style, professional MMA fighter and stuntman.
Professora Mulher Maravilha (Lori Evans Maciel), has been training with Axé Capoeira for over 16 years. Professora trained directly under Mestre Barrão for approximately 5 years, at Vancouver’s headquarters, until he moved back to Brazil. After this she remained training under Mestrando Barrãozinho and Mestrando Ossoduro, who currently leads the Vancouver location. Shehas been teaching children for approximately 13 years. She has taught children of all ages, from 3 years old and up. Currently, she leads the mini kids, (ages 3-6 years old), program at the Vancouver Academy. She also helps support Contra-Mestre Ossoduro teaching youth and adult classes weekly. Lori has travelled to Brazil 5 times to participate in capoeira events and competitions and she has also travelled to events across Canada and the United States. Furthermore, she is a part of the Axé Capoeira Show Team and is the manager of Axé Capoeira Vancouver.

Professor Polvo
Ken ‘Professor Polvo’ Clarke has been training, teaching and performing with Axé Capoeira for over 20 years. He is currently leading 2 western Canadian chapters in Vancouver and New Westminster with a steadily growing student base. He is currently an Axé Capoeira Performance Team Leader and a In-School Programs Leader with over 1000 shows and 100 school programs successfully completed. Polvo travels annually and has competed in numerous Capoeira events in Vancouver, Victoria, Sao Paulo (BR), Recife (BR), Fortaleza (BR), Salvadore (BR), Seattle, Calgary, Toronto, Kansas City, and Santa Cruz. In 2007, Polvo Placed 1st in the advanced category during the Axé Capoeira Kansas City Capoeira Competition.

Instrutora Mumia (Julie Ali) found her calling in Capoeira. Her nickname Mumia came from being shockingly stiff as a beginner. Stiff no longer and almost 20 years later, she is now leading classes at Kerrisdale CC and manages multiple locations. She has travelled to Brazil 5x to train, study, compete and immerse herself in capoeira culture. Instrutora Mumia is the Director of the Afro-Brazilian Cultural Society. She hopes to lead, inspire and elevate capoeira with the next generation of capoeiristas.

Having trained in gymnastics as a child, she later transitioned into a fitness leader and dance performer before fully dedicating herself to capoeira and samba.A global ambassador of the art form, Yulia has traveled to over 8 countries for hundreds of workshops, performances, cultural exchanges, and batizado events. She is a seasoned Capoeira competitor, current Copa Mundial de Capoeira 2023 titleholder, and Capoeira Warrior Challenge Asia champion for 2024.Having trained under the legendary Mestre Barrãozinho in Vancouver since 2011, Yulia has been teaching downtown since 2023. She leads capoeira classes blended with music and acrobatics for all ages at the Coal Harbour and West End Community Centres. Structured for all skill levels, her training builds strength, agility, and confidence—carrying forward the legacy of her masters while inspiring a new generation of capoeiristas.

Lenny was born in Brasília, Brazil, and developed a passion for sports and martial arts from a young age, playing football, volleyball, practicing karate, skateboarding, and swimming, among others. At thirteen, he discovered capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian martial art blending music, dance, and acrobatics, which quickly became his greatest passion. Lenny dedicated his teenage years to mastering the art, learning not only its movements but its history and values. Though adulthood brought new responsibilities and injuries that slowed his training, capoeira’s lessons stayed with him.
After moving to Vancouver, Canada, Lenny found capoeira again through his son. Now part of the Axé Capoeira group, he trains harder than ever before. He now teaches and continues to share his love for the art, culture, and spirit of Brazil. His nickname “Molejo” is Brazilian Portuguese slang for style, a popular way to describe a smooth, rhythmic body movement, which is how he expresses himself through capoeira.

Antoinette "Nativa" McGill has trained capoeira for over 15 years. She trained under Mestre Barrao, and his son Mestre Barraozhino. She has performed capoeira and Afro-Brazilian dances in schools and communities. Nativa is an elementary school teacher for the Delta School District as well and has over 20 years of experience teaching kids in elementary school.

Axé Capoeira Maple Ridge is located in the northeastern section of Greater Vancouver between the Fraser River and the Golden Ears, which is a group of mountain summits which are the southernmost of the Garibaldi Ranges of the Coast Mountains. Instrutor Doido
Michael “Doido” Yorke was born in North Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and began training Capoeira in 2000 with Mestre Barrão. He first discovered Axé Capoeira on MuchMusic, a Canadian music television show, and was instantly drawn to Capoeira. When the academy came to his high school the following week, he quickly signed up and began training.
Curious about the philosophy, rituals, and stories within the songs of Capoeira, Doido studied Portuguese intensely and became fluent. He considers this one of his greatest assets in Capoeira, allowing him to communicate and learn from Mestres and Professors from around the world. He has traveled extensively throughout North America and Brazil, attending events, batizados, shows, and performances.
“Doido” means crazy. He received the nickname for his fearlessness toward falling while training acrobatics. He learned early that, in Capoeira as in life, it doesn’t matter if you fall, but how quickly you get back up.
Instrutor Doido currently trains with Mestre Barraozinho and Mestrando Ossoduro at Axé Capoeira Headquarters in Vancouver and teaches Capoeira at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in South Surrey, B.C.
